How do I rescan or re-tune my Freeview or Freesat box - add channels?

Answer: Varies

There are many models and makes, but generally they have a similar menu and setup feature. This basic and standard systems are outlined below and in most cases will work:

Method 1 - Basic

  1. Select "Menu" from your remote control

  2. Choose" Installation" or "Setup"

  3. Then select "Automatic Channel Scan" or "Add channels". You may be asked if it is ok to replace the channel list - press "OK", "Enter" or "Yes" button

  4. Wait whilst the scan takes place

  5. Check and see if all is correct.

Method 2
- Standard

  1. Select "Menu" from your remote control

  2. Choose" Installation" or "Setup"

  3. Then select "First Time Installation", "Installation". You will be asked if it is ok to replace the channel list - press "OK", "Enter" or "Yes" button

  4. Wait whilst the scan takes place

  5. Check and see if all is correct.

NOTE: When you scan, do it on a dry day and preferably not windy as the rain on the aerial degrades the reception

You will find a more comprehensive list giving detailed instructions for the various manufactures and their different models. You will find it at Digital UK - Re-tuning Instructions

Why is my Freeview box still missing channels?

Answer: Varies

There can be several reasons and solutions for this. Having tried the solutions above and you still have missing channels:

Method 3 - Advanced

  1. Try asking neighbours to see if they are experiencing the same problem. If not it might be related to your receiver or your aerial/cable. To eliminate the receiver as the problem, borrow one from family or a friend to try. If a different receiver does not work and your neighbours are getting these channels, then you need to get the aerial/cable/connections checked by a professional

  2. The transmitter could be on lower power until the switchover or until all transmitters have been switched

  3. if (1) above does not resolve it: You may need to

    1. Unplug Freeview box or if built into TV, the TV at the mains and also unplug the aerial (at the RF 'in' socket) and wait about a minute

    2. Plug it back into the mains, but NOT the aerial at this stage

    3. Re-scan or re-tune using the "Installation" or First time Installation not the "Automatic Channel Scan or "add channels" option (by doing this it will fail to find any channels and clear your existing channel list)

    4. Now plug in your aerial and do a complete scan again. If that does not fix the problem then we can only assume that (2) above applies

NOTE: When you scan, do it on a dry day and preferably not windy as the rain on the aerial degrades the reception

Can I receive Freeview on a Freesat Box?

Answer: NO

Freesat Digital Boxes do not have a Freeview Tuner built into them. However if your TV has a built-in Freeview Tuner or a Freeview HD Tuner then you can use the Freeview and Freesat in conjunction with one another as long as you have an aerial installed - just plug in your RF cable to your TV. But you will not be able to record the Freeview programmes with the Freesat PVR Box

If you don't have Freeview built into your TV, you could buy a cheap Freeview Digital Box, or if you want HD - a more expensive box. Remember that Freesat receives it's channels/programmes from a satellite and Freeview receives them over-the-air through your aerial - two different technologies!

Can I receive Freeview HD on a BT Vision Box?

Answer: NO. As of October 2010.

However in a recent communication between BT Vision and TV Digital info - it is likely to be introduced. I quote: "...the V-box does not have a (Freeview) HD receiver built in. This is something BT are working towards making available for
BT customers, but it's not available at this time"

UPDATE MAY 2011
Latest communication from BT Vision . . .

"There are currently no HD channels available on BT Vision. However they will be soon. There is Video on Demand HD available through the On Demand section of the Vision Box.
BT is working hard to provide this service to their customers but we still do not have a confirmed date." (underline DIGITALTV Info)

So the answer is still NO, but there is some progress. Watch this space!

When will my area switch?

Answer: Varies

The country is divided into TV Areas and each area has one or more Transmitters and each Transmitter has several Relays.

So the "powers that be" are switching individual Transmitters and their relays one at a time. Nearly half have switched already and others are scheduled on into mid 2012. Below is a list of helpful pages on this site to assist you

When will I get Freeview HD?

Answer: Varies

Freeview HD is being rolled out gradually. Some areas have got it ahead of their scheduled Digital Switchover. Others have received it months after they switched over to digital. But for the majority is is being enabled at Switchover.

To find out if you can get it - look at the following pages:
