LED TV's

When people see the phrase “LED TV”, they tend to think of an entirely new piece of technology. The LED TV is actually a combination of LCD technology and LED technology. This combination gives you a good quality picture.

There are two positions for the LED lights in the LED TV. You must choose between the two. You can have an LED TV that has the lights coming from the back. This is a back-lit LED TV.

You can also have an LED TV that has the lights on the side, also known as a edge-lit LED TV. (Please note in the illustration above and the comparison picture at the top, the back lit TV has a greater contrast).

Illustrations above are a basic representation of the two technologies not how the are actually assembled, there is in fact several layers that make up the finished product

Choosing your LED TV

You need to make sure that you take your time when thinking about purchasing a LED TV. You need to find the right LED TV for your home. You should look at the LED TV review websites online. These can help you to understand the positives and negatives of the different kinds of LED TVs. A word of caution they look smaller in a showroom, until you get it home!

About the Displays

The LED TV uses the LCD technology in the form of the display screen. LCD displays were the technology that created the flat screen TV. These displays offer a clearer picture. The TVs are also lighter than ever before.

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. The liquid crystals all face in one direction. When the electricity runs through the television, the crystals will align to create the images on the screen. The lighting, whether it be from the back or from the side, creates the colours for the full display.

LED technology is responsible for illumination of the screen, not the picture itself. The LED technology is what has replaced fluorescent lighting in standard LCD TVs. The small LEDS are found on the back of the TV, or on the sides of the TV. This technology also allows the LEDs to be dimmed independently on demand.

There are two types of LED lights that are used for LED TVs. While some of the TVs use RGB LEDs, others use white LEDs. Both types are considered upgrades from old fluorescent tubes.

Benefits of the LED TV

There are multiple benefits to LED TVs. One of them is the fact that LED TVs are considered to be better for the environment than other TVs. The manufacturing process does not use mercury. The LED TV also uses less power than other forms of television.

LEDs are thin when compared to other televisions. The back-lit and side-lit LEDs allow for the television to be small and light.

The biggest benefit of the LED TV comes from the technology behind the LED lights. The LEDs create a deep black, allowing for a deeper and more interesting contrast. The old fluorescent tubes could not create this deep black, and therefore did not have the contrast of the LED TV. (see illustration below) Standard TVs are lit by fluorscent tubes either side of the screen

Which is best for you?
Well that depends on the budget you have to work with, they are more expensive than a standard LCD TV and the LED back-lit the dearer of the two.
•  Typically a 40" LED/LCD edge-lit TV starts from around £800
•  The same type but back-lit 40" TV fetches in the region of £1,700+
Obviously, if you leave it long enough, due to increased sales, prices will fall. Or the technology moves on - it is always worth waiting. Why pay a premium?
