Freeview is the main provider of Digital TV in the UK. If you watch Freeview TV then the Digital Switchover affects you. Freeview has come a long way from its inception and has many channels in its line-up
Freeview HD
In December 2009 Freeview went High Definition. Just a few channels are available at present. more are to be added later. However, under the present limitations of bandwidth there is not likely to be many more
BBC
BBC has been the main provider of entertainment in the UK. It was the first Broadcasting company in Britain and as a non-commercial company it relies on the funds from the license fees
ITV
ITV followed the BBC in the UK with a different approach to Broadcasting. It receives no funding from the license fees and solely relies on revenue from advertisers and investors
Channel 4
Is another commercial TV Broadcasting company, and along with other subsidiaries such as More 4 and Film 4 proved a wide selection of entertainment
Channel 5
Channel 5 started life as a controversial TV broadcaster as it screened programmes other broadcasters avoided. However over a time it has established itself by buying in excellent programmes from the US such as Law & Order, CSI, NCIS, House, etc.
Topup TV
If you want that little bit more than the selection that Freeview has to offer but do not want to go to satellite then Topup TV can provide it. You need a Box with a 'card slot' so you can buy extra premium channels on subscription
Sky Digital
Sky Digital is the main broadcaster of satellite TV in the UK. It has a very impressive line-up of superb programmes, with many broadcast in glorious HD (HD Box and subscription required)
Freesat
Freesat is the result in of a marriage between the BBC and ITV (independent television) channels to provide FREE satellite TV including HD channels. The Box is a bit expensive but worth the investment for better quality pictures
BT Vision
BT Vision is provided to the consumer through a BT Box via your telephone line. It offers a selection of programmes creamed from the best from around the world and in the UK
Virgin Media
Virgin TV is the UK's Cable TV provider. Their showcase is also derived from around the world with a very impressive lineup, some of which come from Sky's best as well
